Is monk fruit actually healthy… or just another “clean” wellness scam?
I firmly believe if it comes from nature, you usually can’t go too wrong.
Well… I guess you can with poisonous mushrooms. Hmm. I digress.
Monk fruit.
One of the cleanest sweeteners with actual health benefits? Maybe. But like everything in wellness, there are shades of gray.
And honestly, people are tired of black-and-white wellness takes.
“Good” food. “Bad” food. “Clean.” “Dirty.”
Reality is usually more nuanced than that.
First… what even is monk fruit?
Monk fruit, also known as Luo Han Guo, is a small green melon native to Asia. Its sweetness comes from natural compounds called mogrosides, which are what make it incredibly sweet without spiking blood sugar.
That’s why monk fruit has become popular in the wellness world and especially among people trying to avoid synthetic sugars or manage blood glucose levels.
Unlike artificial sweeteners, pure monk fruit extract comes from an actual fruit. Not a lab.
Benefits of pure monk fruit:
- No blood sugar spike
- No calories
- Naturally derived from real fruit
- Generally considered safe for people with diabetes
- No known negative effects on the gut microbiome when used in pure form
The key phrase there is: pure form.
Because this is where the conversation gets messy.
The issue isn’t always monk fruit itself.
It’s what companies do to it.
At HIGHERBAR, we always come back to one question:
How far from nature did this ingredient get?
Because ultra-processing changes things.
This is exactly why we stay away from ultra-processed seed oils, synthetic sweeteners, and fake “health” ingredients that are technically legal but biologically questionable.
The more manipulated something becomes, the further it usually gets from what the body actually recognizes as food.
And that’s where a lot of monk fruit products lose the plot.
Not all monk fruit is created equal
Some monk fruit products are completely fine.
Others are blended with fillers, processed sugar alcohols, erythritol (which disrupts the gut) or hidden additives that can cause digestive issues and inflammation.
A lot of commercial monk fruit products are actually mostly erythritol with a tiny amount of monk fruit added for marketing.
That matters.
Because while monk fruit itself may be naturally derived, the final product on the shelf often isn’t.
This is why ingredient labels matter so much. Monk fruit EXTRACT is pure.
And look for fine print that may say "with erythritol" on packaging. If you see that, put it back.
Our stance on sweeteners at HIGHERBAR
We stay far away from:
- Aspartame - god no
- Artificial sweeteners
- Synthetic sugar substitutes
- Sugar alcohols
- Any erythritol blends
- Cheap filler ingredients
- Anything pretending to be “healthy” while being ultra-processed
We also avoid stevia because, honestly, most stevia products taste terrible and are often heavily processed too.
As for xylitol?
It actually has benefits for oral health and can be great in toothpaste, chewing gum or DIY mouthwash. But it’s still not something we personally want in a daily protein bar.
Again. Shades of gray.
Even natural ingredients can become less ideal depending on how processed they are and how often you consume them.
What about sugar?
Same conversation. Not all sugar is equal either.
Raw honey and real maple syrup contain minerals, antioxidants and beneficial compounds. Processed white sugar is basically just a blood sugar rollercoaster with none of the upside.
Nature comes with context.
Modern food manufacturing often strips that context away.
So… is monk fruit bad?
Pure monk fruit extract is great.
Monk fruit becomes more questionable when it’s:
- Blended with erythritol
- Combined with fillers
- Ultra-processed
- Used as a marketing disguise for low-quality products
Like almost everything in wellness, purity matters.
Sourcing matters. Processing matters.
Why HIGHERBAR currently uses monk fruit
At HIGHERBAR, we obsess over ingredients because we actually eat this stuff ourselves daily.
Our standards are honestly much higher than most.
The monk fruit we currently use is:
- Pure extract form from the fruit itself
- No fillers. No erythritol.
- Minimal processing
- Used in an extremely small amount
No junk. No weird blends. No hidden chemicals.
Could we remove it entirely one day? Maybe.
We’re constantly reevaluating every ingredient because that’s what happens when you genuinely care about quality instead of just marketing “clean” wellness buzzwords.
But for now, we feel good about the quality and sourcing of the monk fruit we use.
And that’s the difference.
Most brands formulate around profit margins.
We formulate around what we’d actually want to put in our own bodies long term.
Because your body isn’t a landfill for cheap ingredients.
It’s your temple. HIGHER ONLY.
